Earnest was born in June 1868 in Iowa to parents Harrison and Carrie Venerable (Stalcup). His father Harrison was a day laborer and his mother worked in a Keeping house. He had two brothers Elisandra Venerable and Horance H. Venerable and four sisters, Pearle, Jennie Flor, Mary Lizette (Zetta Stout) and Ida (Wilson) and a stepsister Georgia Pullem. Ida married William Wilson in 1896 and moved out of the family home.

His mother remarried in 1892 and they went to live with their stepfather while in Iowa during this time, in his twenties Earnest was a hotel porter. Around 1910, the family moved to Lincoln and rented a house at 2030 L Street. During this time Archie worked as a Pullman with the C, B & Q railroad and lived with his mother, stepfather, brother, stepsister and three lodgers: John F. Smith (Salesman. 1910), Dexter Washington (Janitor. 1920) and Bessie Washington (Porter. Club. 1910) who also lived with the family. Earnest continued to live with his family and work as a Pullman Porter when they rented their home at 833 N 13th Street in the 20’s.
