Biographical Text

J.J. McWilliams was born in Whitecloud, Kansas. His father was Rev J. McWilliams and Mother Sarah .J. McWilliams who founded the first integrated church in in Lincoln in 1896. In 1904 the church was known as the Third Christian Church and was located at 124 N 23rd Street. He grew up with his brothers Trago .T. McWilliams, R. McWilliams and E. McWilliam. Until 1910. he lived in his parent's home with his three brothers and an older cousin. Also in the house was a child Lloyd .T. Carter age 11 who was categorized in the 1900 Census as an inmate. He continued to live with them until 1910

J.J. Sr. was married to Bertha McWilliams and had five children. daughters Helen and Sarah Elizabeth and sons John McWilliams Jr. , Theodore, Henry and Victor. He had several jobs during his time in Lincoln, in addition to his responsibilities at his church he was a Porter Barber (1900), Pullman Porter with C,B & Q ( 1910-1928) a Dish Washer at Cornhusker Hotel. (1932) and a Janitor at WPA Sewing Center ( 1936-1940).
