Ola was born in Kansas, Nebraska in 1987. She first lived in LIncoln at 2002 D Street with her parents Alex and Mary (Chrismon) Layer. She had three brothers, Homer, Hobart and Vernon, and two sisters Irma and Berniece. After marrying her husband WIlli Baker in 1916, they rented a room at 2235 S Street where Ola worked as a washerwoman.
By 1930 they had rented a house at 720 Q Street address and lived with her daughters Erma and Valda M Baker where she operated a Rooming House out of their home.
