African American social and cultural life in Lincoln Nebraska. 1946-1953

This is the complete run of The Voice newspaper (Scanned PDF's of all pages in each issue. ). This was a weekly African American newspaper published in Lincoln primarily for the Lincoln African American community. Between  April 1865 and January 1866  twelve African American newpapers  began publication primarily in response to the atrocities of slavery. As access to education improved, income and status increase, their ability to purchace newspapers, increaed demand and circulation.the newspapers gradually changed focus,  With the right to vote and more involvement in the policical system, the African American newspapers became more integral to the community. The voice,  published from October 1946- May 1953 contains the documentation of  the socio/ cultural landscape of the African American Community in Lincoln
